Conversation Starter of the Week
Three Tips to "Work on your
Game"
Conversation with Yourself
If you were to talk to yourself about
"working on your game" how would that sound? Would you just leave
those thoughts until tomorrow or would you be writing down all of the things
you want to do everyday, every week and every hour. There is no right or wrong
answer, just notice the choice you are making.
Tip #1
What does the end of your game look like?
For LeBron James the end of the game every year for
his professional life is an NBA championship, what will have happened by the
end of this year for you to say that this year was successful?
Tip # 2
What do I need to do between now and then to get my
desired result.
For example, LeBron James noticed that the other
team was only letting him take outside shots, so he got to the arena early and
practiced those shots they were giving him, so he was ready. When you look at
your life what do you need to practice, learn or implement between now and the
end of the year to achieve your desired result.
Tip #3
Step up to the game and play your best!
For LeBron that looked like taking the clutch shots
and making those extra passes to his teammates, all to win. You are the only
one that can live your life, and there are no do overs. We all wish we could
have some moments and decisions we have made back, but reality says that is not
possible. If you choose to sit out, you are missing out. Choose to PLAY!
Use these tips to help you talk to yourself about
defining the outcome you desire, acquiring the skills and then applying them.

Conversation with Mentee
Young people can relate to the concept of
"Work On Your Game". They put on their "game face" all the
time for test or interviews, they get it, but what may be harder for them to
connect is what to do to actually work on their game. For example, you are
talking to your mentee and she is applying for colleges. You may look at some
of the scores and grade point averages needed to have a chance to get into
those schools, then what. The conversation between the two of you begins on how
to match the scores, grade point averages and activities to increase the
probability of gaining acceptance to a school of choice. Within this
conversation you have already hit on tip one and two. Tip three is building up
the evidence in life that shows that when you define the out come, do the work
and do your best good things happen. How do you build up this evidence? You
build it up with small wins like working on class projects and executing well
on exams. The fact is that it feels good to do well and your mentee wants this
feeling and by using this conversation you can share with her the tools to get
desired results.
As always, share your experience with "working
on your game" and how it made an impact on your life.
